There are pockets of open-minded, conscious, healthy, holistic living all over the country, but it’s still not the norm. For every Yoga studio and food co-op there are fifty malls, Wal-Marts, and McDonald’s, plus all of the other fast food and consumerist chains in-between. Yoga pants are normal public wear now, but only a small percentage of the Yoga-pant wearers are Yoga practitioners.
Consult any psychologist or psychological book and it seems perfectly normal for them to describe, define, and prescribe what is normal, yet much of what is positive in American culture isn’t really the norm. How many gym-goers eat fast-food, protein bars packed with unhealthy chemicals, and over-sugared high-priced lattes? How many people regularly exercise and then smother their faces with cosmetics and skin care products loaded with toxins? How many dieters consume fake sugars and use toxic chemicals to clean their houses? And just how hard would it be to rid plastic from your life?
Being healthy from head to toe and home to car isn’t at all the normal mode of existence in this consumerist culture, and if you express a holistic perspective of living healthy, you’re likely to encounter significant resistance from friends and family. In other words, most people take several aspects of being healthy and convince themselves that they live healthy lives. Your husband might join your effort to eat only locally grown fruits and vegetables, but completely unwilling to stretch every day. Your kids might want to wear organic clothing, yet act totally opposed to eating toasted oats with plain yogurt and fruit for breakfast.
If you don’t set the example of healthy insanity, it’s likely that none of your friends and family will either. Take the time to educate them and yourself about what it means to embrace holistic health. It’s time that we all buy from local businesses, seek handmade products, and support local farmers. It’s time that we completely embrace the insanity of healthy living!
