The Harvard School of Public Health reports that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables will help you stave off a whole host of health conditions, including cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Not only do fruits and vegetables have a number of vitamins, minerals, and other substances that can stave off these various health conditions, but they also help you to cut down on foods that can cause health problems, such as food that is high in unsaturated fat, and food that is high in salt and sugar. Good nutrition is, in many ways, as effective as medicine in preventing chronic diseases.

A number of ways exist to help you keep up your consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Keep a fruit bowl in sight and within easy reach. The idea is that if you are feeling hungry, you are more likely to reach for an apple or a banana if it is in your line of sight than you are to get out a bag of chips or something else that is not as healthy.

Try a variety of fruits and vegetables. Variety is as much a factor in keeping your diet balanced as is quantity. Every fruit and vegetable has its own set of health benefits. Always be on the lookout to try something new.

Make a meal out of just fruits and vegetables. You don’t have to go full vegetarian or vegan to have occasionally a meatless meal. However, it is nice to do so on occasion. Try salads or stir fry.
