Has this happened to you? You dash off to the supermarket with every intention of buying healthy food for the new week. Then you walk in and become overwhelmed by the sites, sounds, crowds, and many choices of foods. Where do you start and how do you find the healthiest foods? Don’t despair. Focus on the Three P’s of the Supermarket to simplify your shopping.

Plan

Your first step should always be planning your menu. Plan your meals and snacks to include fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains. Experts recommend that at least 50% of your plate should consist of fruits and or vegetables. Divide the other half between lean protein and whole grains. After you plan your menu, check your pantry for what you already have on hand. Then make a list of what you need to purchase.

Perimeter

Most junk food is located in the center aisles, so keep to the perimeter of the store. This is where you will find the freshest foods with the least amount of processing. Choose from fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meat and fish, eggs, and yogurt. However, you will find dried beans and whole grains in the center aisles.

Produce

Your cart should look like your plate. Make sure fruits and vegetables make up 50% of your cart. Spend most of your time in the produce department. Choose produce in a variety of colors. You will find the best deals on produce that is currently in season. Buy extra and freeze it for later use.
