Childhood obesity is an epidemic in the United States and the wealthy nations of the world. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 12.7 million children (approximately 17%), from ages 2 through 19 years old, are obese. Fat loss for children is important because of the health risks involved.

In fact, things considered adult health issues are suffered by children because of obesity:

  • High blood pressure,
  • High cholesterol,
  • Impaired glucose tolerance,
  • Risk of type 2 diabetes,
  • Joint problems,
  • Musculoskeletal deformity,
  • Fatty liver disease,
  • Gallstones, and
  • Gastroesophageal reflux.

There are also the social issues and the psychological impact obese children suffer. They can experience discrimination and become targets of bullies. The resulting poor self-esteem issues can continue as an adult.

Here are some tips to fight childhood obesity:

Weight: In most cases, the goal should not be for younger children to lose weight. The healthier option is maintaining weight and having the child grow into it. Older teens can have a target of losing one pound per week until reaching a healthy weight.

Diet: Exercise is important, but society often overemphasizes it. Diet or portion control are more effective with weight control. However, in most cases, it is not a good idea to place younger children on a reduced calorie diet. Diet or portion control is more about good choices.

Family Plan: Do not single out or target your child. This can be emotionally damaging. Moreover, children learn their eating habits from their parents. Be a good example to your children. Take the lead and make the health changes a family event.

Mealtime: Studies have shown that children are less likely to eat unhealthy foods or become overweight when the family eats together. This does not mean plopping down in front of the television, but actually sitting together at the table as a family.

Groceries: Buy only healthy foods. Portion control is important, but the portions must be nutritious. Good nutrition is important for growing bodies and minds. As the adult, it is your responsibility to cut fast food, junk food, and highly processed foods.

Activity: The more active the child, the higher their metabolism. Active children will burn more calories, and this will help maintain a healthy weight. Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily, and this can be broken down into 5 or 10 minute periods.
