Weight-loss can seem a bit daunting at first, and you may not know how to begin. So, let us help; here’s a guide to getting started.

1) One of the most important things to do when starting your weight loss journey is to tell your friends and family your plans. This will help them realize that you are serious about changing your life. It helps when the family gets together for the holidays or cookouts, because they will know that you have opted to eat healthier foods. However, don’t be shy: bring something healthy for the family to enjoy or to replace the unhealthy holiday dessert.

2) Motivation is the key to success. Having your family on board with your weight-loss goals serves as a motivational tool. Your friends and family may lend a word of support to help you get through the rough patches. Another motivational tool that will help you stay accountable for your choices is to have a diet and exercise buddy. They motivate us, telling us that we’re capable of reaching our goals and not to give up. Your diet and exercise buddy holds you accountable for the actions you take toward your weight-loss goals. For instance, they help us stay on top of the food choices we make and how much or if we exercise.

3) Many people don’t realize how many calories they consume each day. So, one way to help you in your journey to reach your goal weight is keeping a food journal. By writing down the foods or drinks you consume in this journal, you’ll be able to monitor the number of calories you take in and the areas that need improvement.

When documenting foods and drinks into your journal, it’s important to know what the serving size of these items are. For instance, a serving size of rice is a half a cup, a serving of chicken is 4 ounces, and a serving of vegetables is a half a cup. However, the exact portions may vary according to food choice, so always check the label on your foods for exact measurements.

Weight-loss doesn’t have to become an overwhelming task, start with small, short-term goals and changes. Gradually changing your lifestyle over time will help you continue with these changes and your diet. Allow yourself a small treat here and there, so that you don’t feel like you are depriving yourself of foods that you enjoy.
