Home workouts can be the perfect way to begin (or supplement) a lifelong fitness habit.
We all see the women’s fitness magazines at the grocery checkout when we are tired, when we are hungry, and we just want to be at home. We could decide to feel terrible about our fitness (or lack of) achievements when faced with The Woman on the Cover with perfect abs, a perfect outfit, and perfect hair. We might also decide to buy the magazine to maybe try the “10 Minute Abs” on page 17… Everyone has 10 minutes.
Everyone starts a fitness routine SOMEWHERE! Ten minutes with a few moves you learn from a magazine or online is definitely somewhere. You can do this stuff at home in your pajamas if you feel like it. Trust me, once you begin to see results in a week or two, you’ll definitely want to add another 10 minutes! You will want to learn different exercises that target different muscle groups. Your self-esteem will improve. You will WANT to work out!
Home is a perfectly acceptable place to work out. You can work out any time you feel like it. You can work out in whatever outfit you want. No one is watching! This is YOU TIME. You will begin to cherish it; protect it like you are a mama bear!
After a few months, you will have reached That Place, where your workout time is almost sacred. This is when you will most likely start looking up cute yoga wear online (which of course is not strictly necessary but a lot of fun). You will also find that you NEED hand weights, a yoga mat, and a jump rope — at bare minimum.
When you have committed to a few hand weights and a yoga mat, you are There. You hold your head a little higher. You feel poised and graceful. Your blood pressure is probably better too.
If you find that the home workout is what will keep you on track, then by all means DO IT! There are so many options: DVD’s, streaming online, books; a combination thereof… The most important thing is to start. Experiment with different routines and times of day until you find what you like and when you are strongest.
Home workouts can become your best friend if the gym scene is not your style. You will see results. You can do as much or as little as you like. If you choose one of the DVD series, such as Barre, you will essentially have an instructor at your fingertips.
Enjoy the fruits of your hard work — and maybe some cute workout wear?
