Drinking bone broth may sound weird to some, but it’s really just the same process our grandmothers used to make their own soup stock. And our grandmas had it right, drinking bone broth is an incredibly healing way to go. The nutrition you get out of bone broth can heal your gut, ease joint pain, boost your energy, make your skin look younger, and support your immune system. Who doesn’t want those benefits?

It turns out that the gelatin found in bones is great for sealing up our intestines, which can help cure constipation, diarrhea, and some food intolerance. Beyond this, it simply helps maintain healthy gut function. In addition, bone broth is a great source of collagen, which has long been lauded as important to maintaining healthy, glowing hair, nails and skin.

Not only is it incredibly nutritious, but it’s also easy to make at home and incorporate into your normal eating habits. Drink a cup of it in the morning as a warm and comforting start to your day, or add it to soups, mashed potatoes, or any recipe calling for broth. Start by going to your local butcher and asking for soup bones. They can be chicken, beef or lamb and must be from high-quality, organic raised animals. Throw your bones in a pot and cover them completely with water. Add a healthy tablespoon of vinegar to help break down and release the nutrients in the bones and allow those bones to simmer for anywhere for 12 – 24 hours, the longer the better. If you’re feeling creative, throw in some garlic, onions, celery and carrots to turn it into a more flavorful soup-like broth.

This rich broth is as economical as it is healthy. Wondering what to do with those leftover bones from your rotisserie chicken? Try making broth! It’s a great way to use the entire animal while reaping the many health benefits we need. For a more detailed recipe to get you started, try this recipe by wellness mama.
