You have spent weeks on a diet. You watch everything little thing that you eat. However, you are going out with friends and would like to indulge just a little. You deserve it, don’t you? Some people swear by allowing themselves to cheat on their diet. They might give themselves a day a week or a month to eat whatever they want. They believe that knowing you can eat a snack in a few days keeps them on their diet.
However, there are many reasons that you should not cheat on your weight loss diet.
- For some people, once they cheat, they are basically done with their diet. They do not have enough willpower to continue it, once they start eating a snack here and there. One little cookie leads to another and another, until you realize that you just ate five cookies. One soda could lead to a daily soda habit. So, for many, it is much easier to keep dieting than to watch it spiral out of control with a single bite.
- Many people can ruin their whole diet in one meal. They might eat sensibly all week but when their cheat day comes, they eat everything that they have been craving. They might eat it all at once! Sometimes, they might eat more calories in one sitting than they were allowed to eat all week. Those calories will add up quickly to ruin all of your hard work all week.
- If you pig out once a week (or month), you are not going to feel good afterwards. No matter how good the food tasted, you are going to feel bloated and uncomfortable afterwards, especially if you have not eaten much. You may also feel guilty for falling off of your diet. Guilt can make you feel as horrible as the uncomfortable feeling you get when you overeat.
- Sometimes when you binge eat after dieting for a while, you could mess up your ability to control your hunger. Often, when you eat less, you feel full with less food. However, one meal could ruin all of that hard work. After a big cheat day, you might realize that you need to eat more food to feel satisfied.
Some people swear by cheat days when they are dieting. They might be able to stick to their diet if they know that they have a treat coming up. However, as good as it tastes, it will probably make you feel bloated and uncomfortable. You may also eat more calories in one sitting than you ate all week. That will ruin your diet really quick. Some people have a problem. Once they start cheating, one cookie leads to several, they have trouble stopping. They eventually just give up on their diet.
