Many women worry about weight training and building muscle. They look at some of the female bodybuilders and don’t like what they see. Large, bulky muscles are not attractive to many people. Weight training will not turn you into She-Hulk, and today I want to discuss why muscle gain is sexy.
Aerobic exercise is important for heart and lung health. However, as we age, it is not our aerobic condition that typically causes us issues. It is the loss of muscle and bone mass that causes us to become debilitated. Only weight training builds muscle and improves bone density.
After 30, we lose between 3% and 8% of our muscle mass every decade. As your muscle mass declines, it becomes harder to burn calories, and it is harder to maintain a healthy weight and body fat percentage. When we hit 60 years of age the deterioration becomes dramatically faster.
Over time, your muscles become weaker and smaller. You don’t understand why you are gaining weight, even though you are eating the same as you always have. You go on a diet, but even though you weigh the same as you did when you were 18, your body looks heavier. This is because fat is roughly 3 times larger than muscle.
Add to this the health issues. As your muscle mass decreases and your body fat percentage increases, you become less responsive to insulin. Your cells can no longer consume blood sugar, and you risk Type 2 diabetes, which then increases the risk of heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, and other health issues.
The fear many women have of becoming bulky is not founded. Muscles require testosterone to grow. Most women have very low levels of testosterone, and can only build small muscles even following an intense bodybuilding workout. Men have roughly twice the testosterone of women, and even a man will find it difficult to grow large bulky muscles.
Muscle gain is the only answer if you want to restore or support your body’s youthful appearance. Moreover, nothing is sexier than the confidence derived from a strong, fit, and toned body. If you would like to talk more about why muscle gain is sexy or anything else, please contact Teri.
