The wellness hash-tag is everywhere. A post about an at-home core workout will be hash-tagged with wellness. Then, two seconds later, you might see a tweet about taking bubble baths decorated with #wellness. The reason we see the term, wellness, being attached to such a diverse array of topics is because wellness encompasses both physical and mental overall health.

To keep your wellness up to par, there’s a lot to remember and maintain. For example, you might be focusing on improving your mindfulness and firming up your tush, while trying to remember to stay hydrated and think positively. Keeping track of all your wellness goals can not only be difficult but can also be counterproductive. Obsessing that you couldn’t finish your workout, or running late to meet a friend because you just had to meditate can leave you feeling more stressed or inadequate. This is why finding a balance is key when trying to enhance your state of wellness.

1. Divide your time fairly. Inevitably, it seems like all our energy goes to work. By the time we finish work, a ten minute Yoga session can seem overwhelming. However, ask yourself, how long did it take you to check all your emails this morning? Sorting through emails can take anywhere from ten to forty minutes depending on the day. Attempt to dedicate an equal or at least comparable amount of time to your wellness. If you can sit in front of your computer stressing for a half hour, you can definitely use ten min of your day for meditation.

Remember that maintaining your sense of wellness will improve your productivity both short and long-term.

2. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Self-punishing is self-defeating. Rather than focusing on everything you screwed up on, focus on all the things you did well throughout the day.

3. Surround yourself with wellness reminders. Particularly in the realm of mental health, remembering to stay calm or to thought suppress negativity is actually not that easy to conquer throughout an entire day. Post a sticky note with an inspirational quote next to your computer, or make a vivid peaceful sunset the background on your phone. The next time you want to use energy toward a negative emotion, you can look at your phone and take a breather.

4. Be a plant person. Plants help you maintain a healthy perspective. Keeping the little bamboo on your desk happy takes you out of the stress zone. According to urban mindfulness expert, Jonathan S. Kaplan, Ph. D, “Relative to a barren environment, the research suggests that having plants around you is a good thing for your health and productivity” (PsychologyToday).

5. Talk openly about your wellness goals. By sharing your wellness ambitions with others, you can further establish that wellness is an important part of your life. Openly discussing your “wellness lifestyle” enhances your public persona, which in turn, heightens your self-confidence and enriches your own perception of yourself. Wellness becomes a part of your identity not just privately, but also publicly.

Furthermore, being open about wellness can inspire others to seek out this physical and mental health. Essentially, you become an inspiration!
