As any busy person can tell you, declaring a fitness goal is the easy part–maintaining your motivation becomes the hardest part of your fitness journey. If you are looking to start a new workout regimen in the new year and are worried about maintaining your motivation, here are some things you can do to keep working towards your fitness goals.
Find a Workout Buddy
Nothing will keep you more motivated to get to the gym every morning than having a partner who has their own goals to work towards. Partner up with your best friend, spouse, coworker or anyone else who wants to make a similar change in their workout habits. That way, you can keep each other accountable for time spent working out. And remember, a workout doesn’t have to be in the gym. You can also join a sports league or simply take brisk walks outside to work towards your goals.
Log Your Progress
Whether you choose to workout with a buddy or do everything on your own, you should still be keeping yourself accountable for your overall fitness achievements. There are a number of ways you can do this, but the easiest is to log your progress. This can be how many inches you lose, the number on the scale or how many reps you complete per week. Phone apps and fitness devices make logging your progress very easy.
Reward Yourself
Providing a reward for a job well done is a good idea, as long as that reward will not set you back on your goals. Your long-term fitness goal should have a series of milestones, so once you reach a milestone you can give yourself something, such as a night out with friends or a new piece of fitness equipment. Some people save their spare change and allow themselves to spend it every time they hit a new milestone. As long as it isn’t spent on an unhealthy habit, it can be a great incentive.
