By creating P90X (and the sequels), Tony Horton has set himself apart as a fitness guru, expert, and most of all, a friend. He has never pretended to be perfect or amazing, in fact he is quite honest when it comes to working out.

People frequently get discouraged working out, they watch other fitness experts and lose confidence. Recently, Tony explained his top 5 workout commandments, which keep him on track and prevent burn out.

  1. It’s okay to dread some workouts. Working out is supposed to be hard, but as Tony is quick to point out. That’s okay. No one should expect to feel 100% all of the time or not dread working out.
  2. Don’t be afraid of trying new moves. Who cares if it’s a tough move? Who cares if you doubt you can do it. Give it a shot. Be careful and listen to your body, but don’t be afraid to experiment. You may just make yourself proud!
  3. Quantity over quality… or quality over quantity? Often times you will hear people say that quality should always come first over quantity. This is often the case in terms of specific exercises, however, Tony’s workouts often encourage working out 5-6 times a week. He acknowledges that when you’re working out that frequently, you often aren’t working out ‘perfectly’ but the consistency is crucial and if you are putting forth an effort you will receive results.
  4. Some effort is better than none. A lot of people fall into the trap of believing that if they aren’t feeling as though they can give 100% effort then there is no point working out. The truth of the matter is sometimes you can’t give 100% and that’s okay. Tony states, “If you just show up, if you did 70 percent, it’s 70 percent better than you did if you would have done zero. Seventy percent is always better than zero percent”.
  5. Don’t do the same workout two days in a row. Even if you feel like you need to focus on that area, or it’s a workout that you are good at. You need variety to prevent boredom. Boredom can breed laziness or lack of effort. Keep things fresh!

Remember, one of the biggest obstacles to staying fit can be your own motivation. Put Tony Horton’s Fitness commandments to the test and see if you can improve your own consistency and motivation!
