Nutrition during any part of the year can be challenging, let alone during the holiday season. With heaping helpings of appetizers, entrees, and rich desserts, navigating your nutrition can feel impossible. But using the following tips will put you in the driver’s seat on the road to healthy holiday eating.
- Start your day for success. Eat a healthy, fiber-rich breakfast and hydrate before your holiday meal with plenty of water to keep your appetite in check.
- Concentrate on conversation. This will keep you away from the finger-foods and easy to grab munchies. If you do give in to the appetizer table, go straight for fruits and veggies first.
- Keep healthy snacks in your desk at the office and in your car. During the holidays, workplaces are typically laden with not-so-great for you treats. By keeping nutritious snacks in your desk, this will help keep the temptations at bay. Don’t forget to keep some healthy snacks in your car as well for the multiple trips to the mall for holiday shopping. This will keep you away from the unhealthy options in the food court.
- Limit your sodium and sugar. This may be one of the hardest tasks at all around the holidays. Bring your own reduced sodium or sugar-free options to a get-together to give yourself nutritious options.
- Avoid alcohol. Now this one may be the most difficult. If you must indulge in holiday beverages, drink in moderation and make sure to drink a full glass of water for each adult beverage consumed. This will keep you hydrated, prevent inflammation, and keep your stomach full.
- Enjoy the weather. Burn off some of those calories by partaking in winter weather activities such as sledding, ice skating, or going for a walk to view all of the beautiful lights and decorations.
Keeping these tips in mind and your good judgement, you can make the holidays a nutritious and healthy time. As always, feel free to contact us or visit our blog for further tips for making your health the #1 priority in your life.
