In this recent interview Tony Horton was asked his thoughts on fitness workouts and what truly makes or breaks a person. He had some interesting opinions. For example he finds consistency to be completely crucial to success and one of the hardest things to achieve.
Tony believes in longevity of workouts. Just look at his famous and popular P90X series. His programs aren’t designed to be a ‘one and done’ workout, but rather a 90 day+ sequence. He also encourages lifestyle changes to coincide with his workouts for maximum benefits.
Horton states that one of the biggest obstacles people need to overcome is their expectation of immediate vast improvements and their difficulty with consistency. Most people hope or expect to see results within a week or two of working out. Sometimes that simply is not the case. It can depend on a wide variety of factors such as your starting point, your effort, how strong you are, your endurance, and much more. “If you have 125 pounds to lose and you’re 42 years old, you’re at a really different starting point than a 27-year-old ex-gymnast who has 9 pounds to lose,” Tony stated in his interview.
Many people give up after a couple of weeks because they have not shown substantial progress. Tony Horton believes that true progress can only be seem after a longer period of time. It also requires patience.
Here are some of Tony’s tips for working towards consistency:
- Be okay with accommodations and gradual progress.
- Realize you’re going to have good days and bad days. It’s OKAY.
- Accept reality. You might not always be perfect. Just do your best.
Don’t get bogged down with the details. Maintain a workout program, keep a schedule. Try to hold yourself accountable by tracking progress or creating a routine. Most of all enjoy your time and enjoy making yourself fit and strong!
