Nutrition is always an important part of life, no matter what your age, gender, or goals. Without proper nutrition we can easily become ill or injured. However, if you are working on muscle gain, proper nutrition can be crucial. Not only to help maximize your muscle gain, but to try to prevent injuries or burn out.
One of the biggest recommendations for proper nutrition while working out is to make sure you are getting enough protein. The best bet is to make sure that you are eating protein with every meal. Protein is crucial for energy and muscle growth. Complex carbohydrates are also a good idea.
As we mature and grow older, attaining muscle can be harder. It can be harder to maintain muscle as well. Additionally, we are more prone to injuries. It may not be a bad idea to take vitamin supplements. Some experts feel that it is almost impossible for us to attain all the necessary vitamins and minerals, particularly when factoring in the stress and strain of working out.
One key thing to consider is the possibility of eating more small meals throughout the day rather than three larger ones. This will give your body a consistent supply of energy and nutrients which can aid in the repairing and growth of your muscles, as well as keep you from feeling worn down or exhausted.
Try to stay away from sugary foods and simple carbohydrates. These foods do not hold much in nutritional value. They may provide small bursts of energy, but nothing long term. That is to say nothing about the possibility of weight gain from the excess calories!
Keep fats and salts to a minimum. Unfortunately, in our diets today eating some fat is almost unavoidable. There are types of fats that are considered to be ‘healthier’. Some examples of these healthier fats include olive oil and peanut butter.
No one wants to feel ill while working out, so don’t eat too close to your workout time. However, you may want to experiment with eating a small snack about an hour before your workout. This may give your body the fuel it needs to complete your workout.
Some workouts, such as P90X strongly recommend some form of protein shake or recovery drink after completing a workout. After a workout your body is in need of extra protein to repair and build up the muscles you just broke down. Now would be a great time to give your body that boost.
Lastly, make sure you drink plenty of water. Drink water throughout the day; make sure you have access to water during your workout. Don’t let yourself get dehydrated!
Make sure that in addition to the above steps you have plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet. It is vital that you are giving your body all the vitamins and minerals it needs. Another good idea is to monitor your condition. You may need to adjust the amount of protein and other nutrients you get depending on how tired or worn out you are feeling. These are some of the most important tips for nutrition in terms of assisting with muscle gain.
