Ways to Boost Emotional Wellness

Ways to Boost Emotional Wellness

If there is a happy barometer, what will yours read? Happy? Sad? Stressed? Hanging in there? If you pause to look within, what is the state of your emotional wellness? If you’re struggling to come up with some positive feedback, your emotional wellness may be in question. Emotional wellness is more than being free from depression, anxiety or psychological issues, though in the course of life, we may experience some of that. It refers to our ability to cope with life’s challenges, the ability to function as a social being and to be resilient in the faces of difficulties. If you look around, some people seem to have it all figured out and they seem content and happy with life in general (no matter their circumstances). What are their secrets? Maybe, their secrets are not so secret after all – they’ve learned ways to promote emotional wellness.

Rest Your Body, Nourish Your Soul

A body that is constantly on the move to fulfill schedules and demands of this busy life or life’s expectations will wear down. You’ll feel tired, exhausted and stressed. Unless you’re a power action figure, your body is not designed to run like the Energizer battery. It needs periods of rest, that’s why sleep is crucial. Sleep gives your body the down time to recharge, rejuvenate and repair. If you’re cranky, anxious and agitated with life’s inconveniences and challenges easily, it may be due to a lack of rest. Giving your body adequate rest (at least 7 to 8 hours of snooze time) will nourish your wellness.

Build Your Self-Esteem, Enhance Your Self-Identity

How you feel about yourself will translate to how you view life. Nursing a low self-esteem can be damaging to your inner being and you may also take it out on others sub-consciously. How do you build a better self-esteem? Do things that make you feel fulfilled – establish a hobby, volunteer, achieve a goal, learn something new. For some people, low-self esteem may stem from a poor self-image. If that’s the case, take time to promote good skin, good dental and physical health – a healthy body is a happy body.

Relieve Stress, Learn to Relax

Is stress getting you down? You feel overwhelmed, distressed and anxious? Although stress is an inevitable part of life, it shouldn’t get to the point where it weighs you down for long periods of time. Recognize stressors in your life and learn to deal with them. For instance, if you have a tendency to stress over datelines and schedules, try not to bite off more than you can chew. That may mean saying no sometimes or planning ahead to get the work done on time. Engage in activities that relaxes you: a walk in the park, a tennis game, or just enjoying time with family and friends.

Don’t overlook your emotional wellness. It’s part and parcel of a happy, healthy life. Take time to relax, exercise to release tension and weave moments of quiet and love into your life. Contact us for more ways to promote emotional wellness.
