A January, 2014 research study published in the academic journal of Eating Behaviors examined the weight loss and health results of people participating in a twelve-week/ninety day commercial weight loss program. The study assessed the health and weight loss of participants before, during, and after their participation in the program. Out of the 112 participants (100 women and 12 men), each lost an average of 3.71% of their original body weight.
The study further showed that the program significantly decreased participants risk factors in a number of very important health areas, such as high cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood glucose levels, and high blood pressure. In fact, all of the participants had lower cholesterol levels, and all showed trends toward a good reduction in blood pressure and fasting glucose levels.
Researchers said: “modest weight loss achieved via a relatively brief, non-intensive intervention using a commercial format can yield significant improvements in cardiovascular disease risk factors.” Fasting glucose level is extremely important too, as it indicates risk for diabetes. 25.8 million Americans have diabetes, and the number is on the rise—in “epidemic proportions”—says the National Diabetes Education Program.
The consequences of carrying around excess weight are detrimental to the body and mind. Yet, we live in a culture of constant misinformation through advertisements that promote unhealthy, processed foods. From commercials to those little ads all over Facebook, media tells you what you should eat and why you should eat more of this or that. Depending on the source, you may find that big companies who promote “healthy food” are really just promoting over-salted, processed, MSG, chemical-laden food. That’s one of the reasons why it’s often very difficult to achieve weight loss alone.
Understanding what you eat and how it effects your body is the first step toward achieving lasting weight loss, so it’s important to get the input of a trained professional who understands nutrition and fitness. It’s also one of the many reasons that research shows that commercial weight loss programs work! For more information, contact us.
